Maria Zankovetska Theatre in Lviv (Ukraine)
The theatre, built between 1837–1842, was founded by Count Stanisław Skarbek. It was the third biggest theatre in Europe then in terms of the number of seats (1460), just after La Scala in Milan and the theatre in Dresden. The first play performed in the theatre was “Maidens' Vows“ by Aleksander Fredro.

In 1872 opera and operetta scene was made there. In 1892 the theatre stopped being used for its intended purpose and remained Stanislaw Skarbek's property. Between 1900–1939 there was a concert hall in the building and in 1908 it was the location of the first cinema in Lviv.
In 1917, according to the regulation made by the president Mykhailo Hrushevsky, State Theatre of Ukraine was created, firstly in Zaporizhia, next in Lviv.
In 1922 the institution was transformed into drama theatre and a year later it was given the name of Maria Zankovetska. In 1991, after Ukraine gained independence, the theatre transformed into a national one. In 2001 it became National Academic Drama Theater.
